About Us<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Since its humble beginnings in 1888, PNG Customs has grown from strength to strength, contributing immensely to the nation\u2019s development despite increasing responsibilities and challenges. It performs a critical role in protecting communities, industries, and the economy from the insidious effects of border crime and the production or distribution of harmful materials. Through its border protection mission, PNG Customs ensures supply chain security and facilitates global trade within a secure and agile trading environment. This work promotes sustainable trade and investment, helping to anchor long-term growth and prosperity for the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Customs Legislation, Authority and Management<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Customs Act 1951 and Customs Regulation 1951 remain the principal legislative instruments empowering the Chief Commissioner and staff of Customs to regulate the movement of all forms of conveyances, persons and cargo. Customs is also empowered to deal with breaches of Customs laws and other associated laws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Import and Excise Tariffs Acts also empower Customs to charge and collect duties and taxes. The Papua New Guinea Customs Service Act 2014 confers on Customs the powers and functions necessary to administer all matters regarding personnel and resources. Funding for Customs and its operations are provided annually under the National Government Budget. Expenditure for the procurement of goods and services that are essential for the efficient functional of the organization is regulated under the Public Finances (Management) Act 1995.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Chief Commissioner of Customs<\/strong> is the principal officer in the organization and reports directly to the Minister for Treasury and the Minister for Immigration & Border Security.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
